Ready for the Elements Ensuring Your Windwalls are Season-Proof

As we gear up for another busy season, it’s time to pull the gear out of storage and give it a thorough “once-over.” While the hydraulic systems and structure of the stage usually get the most attention, your windwalls are the frontline defense against the elements.

Think of your Stageline vinyl like the heavy-duty tarps used by road carriers to protect flatbed loads. They are engineered to endure high tension and nature’s elements, but they perform best when they are flexible and well-maintained.

Before your first load-in of the year, take some time to roll out your vinyl and look for these key maintenance indicators.

The “Flex” Test: Inspecting the Vinyl

Stageline windwalls and skirts are crafted from premium, fire-retardant vinyl designed for years of rugged use. However, environmental factors like UV exposure and salt can eventually impact the material’s flexibility.

  • The Feel: Ideally, your vinyl should feel smooth. If it feels stiff or “papery,” it’s often a sign that it needs a good cleaning and some attention to restore its maneuverability.
  • Fading & Surface Texture: Minor fading is normal, but check for “chalking” (a white powdery residue). Keeping the surface clean helps maintain the integrity of the fire-retardant coating.
  • Stress Points: Examine the areas around the grommets, straps, keders and corners. These are high-tension zones that should be free of fraying or thinning.

Keeping It Clean: Washing and Drying

Proper cleaning doesn’t just make your stage look better; it removes abrasive grit and salt that can degrade the vinyl over time.

  • The Wash: Use a mild soap or a specialized vinyl cleaner and a soft-bristle brush or sponge. Avoid harsh chemical solvents or high-pressure washers held too close, as these can damage the fire-retardant surface and the seams.
  • The Rinse: Thoroughly rinse both sides with clean water to ensure no soap residue remains, which can attract more dirt later.
  • The Dry: This is the most critical step. Never store your windwalls wet. Moisture trapped in the folds can lead to mildew and “clouding” of the vinyl. Hang the walls in a well-ventilated area out of direct, intense sunlight until they are completely bone-dry before folding and packing them away.

Hardware & Rigging: The “Smooth Operation” Check

A windwall is a system, and the vinyl is only as effective as the hardware holding it to the stage. Inspect these critical components to avoid on-site headaches:

  • Straps & Ratchets: Check the edges of the polyester webbing for fraying. If a ratchet is sticking or showing surface rust, a quick service or replacement ensures it won’t fail you during a high-wind setup.
  • Zippers & Plastic Clips: Test every zipper for smooth travel. Check the plastic clips on the door sections and the metal spring closures; these small parts are vital for a weather-tight seal.
  • Steel Cables: Look for “fishhooks” (small broken strands) in the cables. Ensuring these are smooth and tensioned correctly prevents unnecessary wear on the vinyl itself.

Pro Tip: Repairing Your Vinyl Just like a road tarp, small pinholes or punctures don’t mean the wall is compromised. You can easily patch these yourself using a high-quality vinyl adhesive (like HH-66) and a small scrap of matching vinyl. For “medium” patches or more involved repairs like zipper replacements, a local tarp manufacturer or industrial upholstery shop can often provide a quick professional fix to keep your original walls in service.

Genuine Parts for a Genuine Fit

If your inspection reveals hardware that’s seen better days—or if a clip has gone missing over the winter—don’t settle for “close enough” hardware store finds.

You can purchase OEM replacement straps, clips, hooks, ratchets, and cables directly from Stageline. Using original parts ensures the load ratings and dimensions are exactly what our engineers intended for your stage model.
